In Kanpur the ventilation problem usually comes before the cooling problem. Tanning, chemical processing, plating and foundry operations generate fumes, vapour and heat that have to be captured at source and removed on a designed path, and no amount of general cooling substitutes for that. Where a process releases fumes, vapour or heat, extraction capacity and make-up air quantity have to be calculated together. Air removed from a building must be replaced, and if it is not replaced deliberately it will be pulled in through gaps at whatever temperature and cleanliness the outside happens to offer.
